Author: Today I integrated Michael's improvements into the melody editor on the main page.
The most important new features are:
- a cursor that allows you to edit the query anywhere, not just at the very end
- a new "computer keyboard" mode for those who don't like clicking with the mouse
- the option of viewing the melody with flats instead of sharp signs.
While I was at it, I also upgraded the sound manager to the latest version (2.0), but that should not be too noticeable.
I tested it with IE5 (failed, but who cares...), IE6 (works), IE7 (works), Firefox (works), and Opera (works).
If you notice anything other than that right now, only the English version works well (I hope to update the other languages soon), please let me know!

Even if it looks great, i'd like to have the option of displaying flats instead of sharps. Could you create another set with flats and I will incorporate them? Or do you want to do that?
For testing: It should be tested both with IE6 and IE7 (if possible) because IE7 has a new (and better, but not bug-free) Javascript engine. Other things that should be tested are reasonable fallbacks if Javascript or Flash is not available (so that the user can at least enter notes manually without javascript and that he gets a message to disable his Flash blocker if he wants to hear sound). Maybe test it on Safari as well (depends on your user base, best look at your website statistics for that...).

your prototype looks great! Sorry about responding so late - I was on vacation for the last 2 weeks.
I will gladly test it with IE (I guess that's the one missing major browser) and then incorporate it in Musipedia. What kind of credits would you like me to put on the "about" page, where I thank the contributors?

Did you hear it on the "original" piano keyboard? This one uses exactly the same Flash library as the original one.
So, you need Flash. If you have flashblock installed, you must exclude this site manually (since the flash is invisible and you cannot click it).

is there some open source project that builds the UI of musipedia (like it is with Wikipedia), or is it the work of an individual person? If the former, I'd be interested in contributing to that project, because for me the javascript piano keyboard is just a nuisance. If the latter, just take the things below as suggestions :)
As i am no professional musician, and I usually look for music where I do not have notes available, there will be some trial and error required until I get the rhytm well. And I'd like it very much if I could add/remove notes (or change their length) not only at the end, but also in the middle. Currently I can do that in the text box, but the note display does not update properly.
I'd also like to use the keyboard (the one with letters and such, no piano keyboard) and not the mouse for entering my music, similar to the way music trackers handle keyboard input.
Last but not least it is sometimes confusing for me to see the notes with sharp signs (#) instead of flat signs (b), so if there were an option to toggle this (which will obviously require new note graphics) that would be great as well.
For everything except the flat signs, I created a kind of prototype, which does what I want, that works as expected in Firefox 2 and Opera 9. It will most likely require some more compatibility checks and fixes before being integrated into this site.

How to insert music:
Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
For example, you can try what happens if you enter: [l]g'4 g'4 d''4 d''4 e''4 e''4 d''2[/l] (use the Preview function if you don't actually want to post this).
You can create these lists of note names by clicking on piano keys here.
How to post an audio recording:
If you just want to sing, whistle, or play a melody so that other forum visitors can hear it, follow these steps:
- Record your audio here.
- You should notice a 32-character hash code, something like: 2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf
- copy this hash code and paste it into a forum post, enclosed in the audio tags, for example: [audio]2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf[/audio]
How to mark a thread as solved:
