For copyright reasons, that music can't be free, but, for example, http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/ard.asp?SID=147&LID=38
sells files with sheet music you can print yourself, including pop music from the last 75 years.

Is your book written by Barlow and Morgenstern?

Is there a site where pop music of the last 75-100 years is available in printable form?

I own a book called "A Dictionary of Musical Themes"
Crown Publishers. It dates from 1948
Of course it only contains Classical Music.

That one was too big (about 3000 x 4000 pixels, 200 kB). The problem is that in such cases, Musipedia just ignores the upload instead of giving a sensible error message. I'll have to add that.

Dear Rainer,
I already deleted it from my computer. I will try another one, and if it doesn't work I will forward it to you. This web site is terrific. I would like more people to find out about it!

Well, the whole thing is still pretty new, it is not entirely impossible that there are still bugs. If you send me the JPG that didn't work, I can try to upload it myself and see whether I can reproduce the error: error at musipedia.org (replace the "at" with "@").

Thank you for your reply. It is possible that I have some noise on my phone line that is interfering with the midi file transfer. The sound transfers fine, but the notation is a bit garbled. The JPG file transferred but also had errors. I am resigned to getting better at lilipond!

Finale is indeed not recognized, and I think I can't possibly change that since it is proprietary software, and the format could change at any time.

Musipedia just sends back to the browser whatever you have uploaded, using the same extension of the file name. So, if .jpg did not work for you, that's probably because your browser doesn't like it. I noticed that MS Internet explorer does not always show JPG files (sometimes it does, though - I am not sure what it depends on). Most browsers should handle .gif.

Monophonic midi files usually work, while with polyphonic ones, Lilypond does not always give good results.

A third possibility is abc.

I use Finale and Musipedia will not recognize the file. I have tried scanning music to a JPG file, but still no luck. Are there any better ways to upload sheet music. Lilipond is a bit slow. Also, midi files convert with serious errors.

You must login to post a message to this conference.

How to insert music:

Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
For example, you can try what happens if you enter: [l]g'4 g'4 d''4 d''4 e''4 e''4 d''2[/l] (use the Preview function if you don't actually want to post this).
You can create these lists of note names by clicking on piano keys here.

How to post an audio recording:

If you just want to sing, whistle, or play a melody so that other forum visitors can hear it, follow these steps:

  1. Record your audio here.
  2. You should notice a 32-character hash code, something like: 2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf
  3. copy this hash code and paste it into a forum post, enclosed in the audio tags, for example: [audio]2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf[/audio]

How to mark a thread as solved:

If the original question in a thread is solved, please mark it as solved using the "solved" icon (or by just typing [solved] into your post). This makes life easier for people who are willing to identify melodies, since unsolved problems are easier to spot that way. If a problem turns out to not be solved after all, just write [/solved] in a new post, and the thread will be labeled accordingly.
