It turns out that this is a problem with some MIDI players. Or a bug in Lilypond's version of MIDI (depending on how you look at it). Nothing for you to do here, afterall. I'll try to change my default plugin from Quicktime to something else that can interpret the non-track-0 tempo messages. any ideas besides *gasp* Windows Media Player? http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-lilypond/2004-02/msg00346.html

As for the separate fields, I think the Lilypond entry is fine as it is. I'm glad you are so open to changes, though!

hmm - this should have an effect. See, for example, these two entries:

They have different tempi, both in the Lilypond source code and in the resulting MIDI file.

I am thinking about making editing Lilypond source code a bit easier by providing different fields - one for notes, another one for the tempo, and a third one for lyrics. Musipedia would then assemble one Lilypond source file from this.

Maybe there should still be an "expert mode" for entering a more complete Lilypond file.

Right now, Musipedia does something in the middle. It analyses the entered Lilypond code (rather crudely) and adds stuff if it seems to be missing. While making entering a melody a bit easier (since there is no requirement to specify a MIDI tempo, for example), this might also be causing your problem with the ignored tempo.

Does the idea with different text fields sound sensible?

Subject: MIDI tempo

I was noticing that my \tempo command in the \midi section didn't seem to have any effect on the saved .mid file. At first I thought I was doing something wrong, but then I realized that all of the MIDI files that I've heard on this site so far have all had the same exact tempo. In the meantime, I could just upload MIDI files from my lilypond at home, but they always come out louder than the ones in the Musipedia.
Any thoughts?

Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
For example, you can try what happens if you enter: [l]g'4 g'4 d''4 d''4 e''4 e''4 d''2[/l] (use the Preview function if you don't actually want to post this).
You can create these lists of note names by clicking on piano keys here.

If you just want to sing, whistle, or play a melody so that other forum visitors can hear it, follow these steps:

1. Record your audio here.
2. You should notice a 32-character hash code, something like: 2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf
3. copy this hash code and paste it into a forum post, enclosed in the audio tags, for example: [audio]2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf[/audio]

If the original question in a thread is solved, please mark it as solved using the "solved" icon (or by just typing [solved] into your post). This makes life easier for people who are willing to identify melodies, since unsolved problems are easier to spot that way. If a problem turns out to not be solved after all, just write [/solved] in a new post, and the thread will be labeled accordingly.
