I've seen that called Mysterioso Pizzicato. Try googling that. One source, which I can't get to because it's at jstor, says it's by one J. Bodewalt Lampe, but I can't find anything else on that with Google alone.

I got it!!!! PDQ Bach! I can hear it in my head. It's a fugue. shoot! Can anybody help me out? but it is trilled on the half note for sure. how on earth did I ever forget about that?

Well, shoot, this is the one I came here to find out about. I wouldn't expect a teaching book to be the source of anything; think Crunchy Flakes. Ah well.
Guess I'll post back when I work out a melody for "that music used with silent films to mean that there's a fistfight happening on a train." * DDRDDRDDDRDDDUUURDR is part of it, as is * UDDDDDDDDUUDRDUUD , but I can't get the melody search to play back sound so I need to work it out in front of a keyboard or Noteworthy or something.

Well it's obviously none of those. I'm pretty sure it occurs (once) in the soundtrack to Around the World in 80 Days, by Victor Young, from 1956; however, I'm really really thinking it's not that originally.
Any more ideas would be appreciated...

That's the beginner book I was thinking of! How funny! All I could remember was the word "villian". It was the lesson on staccato notes, I think. It's odd how those old lessons stick with you after all these years. :-)
It was in one of my beginning piano books, either "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" by John Thompson, or in the beginning book of the John W. Schaum series. I remember part of the words (but I will speculate they were made up by the piano book's author just to aid in learning the music):
"Got to catch that villan,
Lock him up in prison
He must learn that crime won't pay...

Nope, I don't have it anymore. sorry. It's a fairly common figure, though. I've heard it in a tango; I think was something odd like "Hernando's Hideaway". It can also be heard in a cartoon or two, I think. I'm not sure which ones... but I'm envisioning a cartoon character sneaking around, and then on the half note, they trill the half note and the character sneaks faster on tippie-toes. Am I imagining things, or does anybody else remember something like that?
I think I have it in one of my beginner piano books. Let me see if I can find it. I may not have it anymore, though.

Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
For example, you can try what happens if you enter: [l]g'4 g'4 d''4 d''4 e''4 e''4 d''2[/l] (use the Preview function if you don't actually want to post this).
