Much obliged for the list. You are right that I ought to have been able to get a reasonable list pretty quickly myself.

I fully realise that a palindromic Parsons Code doews not mean that the melody itself is palindromic. As to the purpose of the enquiry, I can only say that, sadly, I am unable to reveal this at the moment, but promise to do so at a later date, which will probably be at least 3 months off. Bet you're both even more curious, now!

I don't quite understand your method. Anyways, melodies with a palindromic Parsons Code are not palindromic themselves. Simple counterexample: take the sequence of the three notes c-e-c. I would call this palindromic, but the Parsons Code is UD. So, melodies with a palindromic contour are just almost palindromic. Another restriction, of course, comes from the fact that we are only looking at the gross contour, without distinguishing between different intervals, but only looking at their direction.

Of course, I am curious myself why anyone would want to find contours with these constraints.

Also, I am wondering how I could make such searches easy with an "advanced search" form. For me, it was easy by issuing an SQL statement (something like "Select contour from tunes where substr(contour,1,5) = reverse(substr(contour,7,5)) and substr(contour,5,1)='U'"), but of course I don't want to allow any visitor of the site to issue any SQL statement.

Any creative ideas on useful and easy-to-use advanced search options?

Heh, I was just going to post a similar list, but Rainer got there first. But Bud, you got me curious, where do you need such a melody? I mean, if the Parsons code is palindromic, doesn't mean that the tune also is palindromic (it rather makes it "skewed"). Would be interesting though to find out if there are any really palindromic melodies, i.e. putting the notes in reverse order would give the same melody. You could search for those by using a palindromic Parsons code and skip the ups and downs in the last half. Let's see if I find any such melodies in Musipedia by using this method.

Subject: ????U?U???? tune with palindromic start sequence sought
Help please!

I need the name of ANY tune or melody, where the first eleven characters of the Parsons Code are palindromic (ie they read the same in either direction). The fifth and seventh character MUST be U.

In other words: ????U?U????

How to insert music:

Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
