Hey, thanks for sharing in my joy due to finding the song.

I was sitting on my bed having no hope, thinking how can I find this song, and playing that melody on guitar in many ways, trying to identify the song by using SoundHound app, but still having no positive results. Then I tried humming the melody as I played it, just for fun (as a musician I'm a bad singer) and then - boom, 3 positions, Morcheeba ("Otherwise"), Linking Park ("Crawling In My Skin", I guess), and something else that I can't remember. I was almost sure it's Morcheeba after I saw the picture that was attached to the song title. And it was. So this is how I found it.

Greetings,
Cornholio.

PS Didn't knew it was a British band.
Now I feel so much close to them ; )

nice song...but I'm glad you finally located it because only someone who'd heard it before would realize the faintest of resemblance between the musical snip-it you provided and the refrain of the song. I'm curious to know what was the break that allowed you to find this song especially that Morcheeba is a British band, but you did correctly estimate the singer's age...

Morcheeba - Otherwise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxn-fz9mjo4

Finally I found it!
After 12 years.

The description matches well to the music video.

Only the melody is a little little bit not the same but you can still hear 95% of resemblance to the song.
So if you knew it, you'd recognize it easily.

Now I'm ready to pass away.

Thanks!

Greetings,
Cornholio

DON'T BE SCARED OF THE LENGTH OF THIS MESSAGE

- She was slim and looked like about 25
- I don't remember any other singers in this song
- I'm almost sure there was only her singing

I tried to find out the song by:

searching with google for the summer MTV sets for 2001/2002,
have seen lists of 50-100 most popular song for this period and checked it all (except those that I know it isn't her),

searching by youtube for the most popular music from those years
(reviewed more than 200 videos)

and using this site
http://lists.lucywho.com/african-american-female-singers-c14072522.html to specify the artist I'm looking for by extrapolating her age (she was about 25 then + 12 until now = 30-40, checked all the list of 28-42 years old african-american female singers, actress, models etc from this site by tapping their names in youtube + "2001" and "2002".

No positive relusts.

I guess it was 2002 because I remember I visit my grandma for holidays in 2002 and it was the time I watched MTV a lot

AND

I remember songs like "By The Way" (RHCP 2002), "Without Me" (Eminem 2002), "A Thousand Miles" (Vanessa Carlton 2002)

BUT

The song may be older....
But it didn't look like it was older than other productions.

This song plays in the back of my head for years...

I don't remember any lyrics.. I can remember only a few vowels in the chorus but it doesn't help me at all. No lyrics. I was too young to focus on lyrics. I remember it was a smooth song, no crazy drums or loud instruments.

Once again, the most important things about this song that I still remember and can be helpful:

- Woman
- Solo singer
- ~25 years old in 2002
- Slim
- African american
- Short dark hair
- Paper scenery in the music video (everything was fake, made with paper and looks like 2D)
- A jail and a white-skin prisoner in the music video
- "A river or something" ;) in the music video
- smooth song
- For the chorus melody check the 1st post's attachment

I don't want to spend all my life on searching the song..
It can't be so difficult!

Please help

Best regards,
Cornholio

Subject: 2001-2002 POP SONG
- There was a pop song in the summer of 2001 or 2002 that I heard watching MTV.
- It was very smooth.
- The music video performed a black short-haircut woman with black hair.
- The scenery was made with paper.
- There was a jail and a white-skin prisoner involved in this video.
- And a river or something...

They aired it quite often then. I never heard this song again.

If you have any guess that only partially match the description, please post it, I may remember the song wrong. It's been 13 years actually...

I really need your help. It's been so long and I can't find the song...

>>>>> I attach the chorus melody played on guitar.
The file is short but it's made with 4 sequences.
Let's call it 1, 1, 2, 3 - this is how the sequences goes. The 1st one repeats twice in a row - 1, 1 - then the melody changes to 2 and 3.

1, 1, 2, 3

As the guitar melody ends with 3,
the 3 also makes the intro to the song and it's played on strings, violins or something..
Please help.

Best regards,
Cornholio

How to insert music:

Add a bit of sheet music, along with a MIDI file, simply by entering note names in Lilypond syntax between the [L] and [/L] tags.
For example, you can try what happens if you enter: [l]g'4 g'4 d''4 d''4 e''4 e''4 d''2[/l] (use the Preview function if you don't actually want to post this).
You can create these lists of note names by clicking on piano keys here.

How to post an audio recording:

If you just want to sing, whistle, or play a melody so that other forum visitors can hear it, follow these steps:

  1. Record your audio here.
  2. You should notice a 32-character hash code, something like: 2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf
  3. copy this hash code and paste it into a forum post, enclosed in the audio tags, for example: [audio]2a40281c5001c5a7d8c9f57fcdeccfaf[/audio]

How to mark a thread as solved:

If the original question in a thread is solved, please mark it as solved using the "solved" icon (or by just typing [solved] into your post). This makes life easier for people who are willing to identify melodies, since unsolved problems are easier to spot that way. If a problem turns out to not be solved after all, just write [/solved] in a new post, and the thread will be labeled accordingly.
